Angelenos, The People of Los Angeles
The population of Los Angeles is one of most diverse. Hispanic Americans make up 47% of the Los Angeles population, Whites make up 27%, African Americans make up 11%, Asian Americans make up 15%, Native Americans make up 2%, and 3% are two or more races. Men and women who study population trends say
this is the future city and what U.S. will become soon - cities and a nation without a majority race. There are tons of
different people all living in Los Angeles having hopes and dreams. Mexican
people send an average of six billion dollars home to their families each
year. African American women hold
high-ranking jobs like teaching and government.
Education
You have to attend school by at least at the age of six, but you can also go if you are younger than age six. You have to stay in school until the age of 18. If you want to leave earlier than this, you have to pass a special state exam or graduate from high school. Los Angeles has the second largest public school system in the U.S. Some high schools focus on just art or filmmaking. There are also many colleges and universities. The University of Southern California (USC) is the oldest school and opened in 1880.
Housing
Before the 1960's there was a lot of land and it was fairly inexpensive to buy and build on. Most houses built were ranch style, cottages, and bungalows for a single family. By the 1960's there was not much land left and it costs a lot to buy as a result. The cost of materials to build homes went up. A single family costs more than most people could afford. So apartments were built instead. This trend continues - they build more apartments than houses.
